GARDEN OUTDOOR SAUNAS

Garden Outdoor Saunas — Your Garden's Most Valuable Addition
There is something uniquely satisfying about stepping out of your back door, walking across the garden, and entering a beautifully built sauna cabin of your own. No membership fees. No booking ahead. No sharing with strangers. A garden sauna is one of the most transformative additions you can make to a London or Surrey home — combining genuine health benefits with a dedicated outdoor space that gets used year-round, not just in summer. At The Sauna Company, our bespoke garden saunas are custom-designed and built on-site from premium Scandinavian timbers, starting from £12,995 fully installed. Whether you have a generous garden or a modest one, we will design something that fits it properly.
Built for the British Garden — and the British Weather
An outdoor sauna in the UK needs to be built differently to one in Scandinavia. The timber specification, the insulation, the roof design, and the door seals all need to account for a climate that is wetter, more variable, and more demanding on external structures than the dry Nordic winters these cabins were originally designed for. We use thermowood and thermally modified timbers that are dimensionally stable through wet winters and warm summers, with roofing and cladding systems specified for long-term British weather performance. The result is a garden sauna that looks as good in February as it does in August — and performs consistently throughout the year without warping, cracking, or deteriorating.
Every Garden Is Different. Every Sauna Should Be Too.
A barrel sauna works beautifully in a long, narrow garden. A cube sauna suits a more contemporary outdoor space with clean architectural lines. A custom-built cabin sauna can be positioned to frame a particular view, align with existing garden structures, or incorporate a changing area, cold plunge access, or outdoor shower. We don't offer standard sizes and tell you to make them work — we start with your garden, your vision, and your budget, and design from there. Before any build begins, you receive a full 3D visualisation of exactly how your garden sauna will look in situ, so there are no surprises when the timber goes up. Installation typically takes between three and seven days, with minimal disruption to your garden.
From Garden Sheds to Luxury Wellness Sanctuaries
We have converted a Hammersmith garden shed into a WiFi-connected Finnish sauna. We have built luxury outdoor sauna
complexes in Surrey with changing rooms, cold plunge pools, and outdoor terraces. We have installed compact cube saunas in gardens that most people would have said were too small. The point is that the constraints of your outdoor space are rarely as limiting as they first appear — and 15 years of bespoke sauna design across London and Surrey has given us the experience to work with almost any garden configuration. If you have an outdoor space and an idea, call us on 0208 058 0871 or book a free consultation. We'll tell you honestly what's possible, what it will cost, and what your garden could become.
Garden Sauna FAQ's
Do I need planning permission to install a garden sauna in London?
In most cases, a garden sauna in London and Surrey falls within permitted development rights and does not require planning permission, provided certain conditions are met. The structure must be single-storey, must not exceed four metres in height with a dual-pitched roof or three metres with any other roof type, must not occupy more than 50% of the total garden area, and must not be positioned in front of the principal elevation of the house. Additionally, permitted development rights are more restricted for listed buildings and properties within designated areas such as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or conservation zones. We strongly recommend checking with your local planning authority before committing to a build — and we can advise on the likely permitted development status of your specific project during your free consultation.
What types of garden sauna are available and which is best for my garden?
The main garden sauna types we install at The Sauna Company are barrel saunas, cube saunas, and bespoke cabin saunas. Barrel saunas have a curved, cylindrical form that is well-suited to narrower garden plots and delivers excellent heat efficiency due to the reduced internal air volume. Cube saunas have a clean, contemporary rectangular form that suits modern garden designs and can incorporate large glazed panels, decking areas, and changing rooms more easily. Bespoke cabin saunas offer the greatest flexibility in terms of size, layout, and specification — and are the right choice when you want a permanent structure that feels fully integrated into your garden rather than placed within it. During your free design consultation, we'll assess your space and recommend the most appropriate form for your specific garden and aesthetic.
How much does a garden sauna cost in London and Surrey?
Garden saunas at The Sauna Company start from £12,995 fully installed, which includes design, site survey, 3D visualisation, timber structure, heater, electrical installation, and finishing. Barrel and cube saunas at the standard specification sit in the £12,995 to £16,995 range depending on size and features. Luxury garden sauna complexes incorporating changing rooms, cold plunge pools, outdoor showers, or premium timber and glazing specifications are priced on application and can represent a significant enhancement to both your lifestyle and your property value. Every quote is fixed following a free consultation and site survey — there are no hidden costs or post-installation surprises.
What is the best wood for an outdoor garden sauna in the UK?
For outdoor garden saunas in the UK climate, thermally modified timbers — particularly thermowood and thermowood aspen — are among the most reliable choices. The thermal modification process involves heating the timber to very high temperatures in a steam environment, which permanently reduces its moisture content, increases its resistance to rot and decay, and dramatically improves its dimensional stability through wet and dry seasonal cycles. This makes thermowood significantly more durable outdoors than standard softwood cladding, which can warp and crack under the conditions of a British winter. For the sauna interior, we typically use Nordic spruce, alder, or aspen — all low-resin timbers that remain comfortable to the touch at high temperatures and do not off-gas in the heat.
Can a garden sauna be used all year round in the UK?
Yes — a properly built garden sauna can and should be used throughout the year in the UK. In fact, many of our clients find that winter is when they get the most value from their outdoor sauna, particularly the contrast between stepping into 90°C heat and then cooling down in cold outdoor air. A well-insulated garden sauna cabin will reach operating temperature within 30 to 45 minutes using a quality heater, regardless of the ambient outdoor temperature. The key is in the build quality — specifically the insulation specification, the door and window seals, and the roofing system. A poorly insulated cabin will struggle in winter and run up energy bills. Ours are built to perform in all four seasons, which is why we specify thermowood cladding, commercial-grade insulation, and quality-sealed doors as standard across our outdoor range.
