FINNISH SAUNAS

Finnish Saunas — The Original. Done Properly.

The Finnish sauna is not a trend. It is a 2,000-year-old practice, refined over generations into one of the most evidence-backed wellness rituals in the world. Heat the body to 80–100°C. Sweat deeply. Cool down. Repeat. That deceptively simple cycle triggers a cascade of cardiovascular, neurological, and metabolic responses that no supplement, gadget, or cold plunge can replicate on its own. At The Sauna Company, we design and build bespoke traditional Finnish saunas across London and Surrey — custom-fitted to your exact space, built on-site from premium Scandinavian timbers, and starting from £7,995. If you're going to do it, do it right.

The Science Behind the Heat

A properly built Finnish sauna does something no off-the-shelf cabin can reliably claim — it performs. The heat needs to be even, the ventilation needs to be engineered, and the humidity needs to respond correctly when you pour water over the stones. A sauna that looks beautiful but breathes badly fills with stale, oxygen-depleted air within minutes. Sessions get cut short. The ritual loses its power. We've spent 15 years studying sauna science precisely because we know that the difference between a sauna that genuinely improves your health and one that merely gets warm comes down to the design decisions made long before the first timber goes up. Every Finnish sauna we build is modelled for air volume, heat distribution, and ventilation before a single panel is cut.

Built to Your Space, Built to Last

Our Finnish saunas are not assembled from a kit. They are built on-site, to the millimetre, in whatever space you have available — a spare room, a basement, a garage conversion, a garden outbuilding, or a dedicated wellness room. We work with premium Scandinavian timbers including thermowood aspen, Nordic spruce, and alder, paired with market-leading HUUM and Harvia heaters chosen specifically for the volume and ventilation profile of your cabin. Every build includes a full 3D design visualisation before work begins, and most installations are completed within a week. The result is a permanent, room-quality Finnish sauna that adds genuine value to your home — structurally, aesthetically, and on the property market.

Finnish Sauna FAQ's

What is a traditional Finnish sauna and how does it work?

A traditional Finnish sauna is a heated wooden cabin that uses a kiuas — a stone-filled heater — to raise the air temperature to between 80°C and 100°C. The bather sits in the dry heat, typically for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, before cooling down with cold water, a shower, or outdoor air, then repeating the cycle. The defining ritual of the Finnish sauna is löyly — the practice of ladling water over the heated stones to create a burst of soft, enveloping steam that intensifies the sensation of heat without meaningfully raising the air temperature. This combination of dry radiant heat, controlled humidity, and alternating hot-cold cycles is responsible for the broad range of cardiovascular, neurological, and recovery benefits that decades of Finnish and Scandinavian research have documented.

What are the health benefits of a traditional Finnish sauna?

The health benefits of regular Finnish sauna use are among the most comprehensively researched of any wellness practice. A landmark 20-year study from the University of Eastern Finland found that men who used a sauna four to seven times per week had significantly lower rates of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and all-cause mortality compared to those who used one once a week. Additional research points to improvements in blood pressure, arterial stiffness, lung function, chronic pain, and sleep quality. The intense heat also accelerates muscle recovery and reduces delayed-onset muscle soreness, making a home Finnish sauna a highly effective recovery tool for those who train regularly. These benefits are dose-dependent — the more consistently you use your sauna, the more pronounced the results.

How much does a bespoke Finnish sauna cost in London?

Bespoke traditional Finnish saunas at The Sauna Company start from £7,995, fully installed. The final price is determined by the size of the space, the timber specification, the heater model selected, and any additional features such as LED lighting, glass walls, chromotherapy, or WiFi-enabled controls. Premium Finnish sauna builds with exotic timbers, integrated bench heaters, and luxury finishes typically range from £13,995 upwards. Every quote is fixed and provided following a free design consultation and site survey, so you will know the full cost before any commitment is made. We do not charge for design time or 3D visualisation.

What timber is used in a traditional Finnish sauna and does it matter?

Timber choice matters considerably in a Finnish sauna — both for performance and for longevity. The ideal sauna timber needs to be dimensionally stable under repeated high-heat and high-humidity cycles, low in resin content to avoid burning or sticking at high temperatures, and comfortable to the touch even when the cabin is at full temperature. At The Sauna Company, we work primarily with thermowood aspen, Nordic spruce, and alder — all sourced from Scandinavian suppliers and selected for their performance characteristics rather than simply their appearance. Thermowood aspen in particular is exceptionally stable, virtually resin-free, and develops a beautiful patina over time. We'll advise on the right timber for your specific build during the design consultation.

How long does it take to build and install a Finnish sauna at home?

Most of our bespoke Finnish sauna installations are completed within three to seven days on-site, depending on the complexity of the build and the electrical work required. Traditional Finnish saunas with a kiuas heater require a dedicated electrical circuit — typically between 6kW and 10.5kW depending on the cabin volume — which is factored into our installation planning from the outset. Prior to the build, we carry out a full site survey, produce a 3D design visualisation for your approval, and plan the ventilation system in detail. The result is a seamless installation with minimal disruption. From initial consultation to a fully finished sauna, most projects are completed within four to six weeks including the design, survey, and any preparatory electrical work.
