AQUA SPAZIO SANA

Standard Finnish Sauna

Authentic traditional sauna experience

A traditional Finnish sauna is a type of sauna that uses dry heat to create a hot, humid environment. The heat is typically generated by a wood-burning stove or an electric heater, and the temperature inside the sauna can reach up to 185°F (85°C) or higher. In a Finnish sauna, the heat is dry, instead of the humidity found in a steam room. The traditional Finnish sauna is typically heated to between 75°C and 95°C (at the top of the sauna near the ceiling) and it is the heat of the room that causes the person to become warmer and sweat.

Water is poured onto heated sauna stones to create the distinctive löyly, or atmosphere, of a traditional steam sauna. This atmosphere can be as humid or as dry as the sauna bather desires - although typically it is kept to around 5% to 15%. People using a traditional Finnish sauna will typically stay in the sauna room for anywhere up to 30 minutes, after which time they may choose to get out and take a cold shower or ‘plunge’ (complete submersion in cold water) before repeating the process as many times as is desired. This cycle of sauna and plunge is used to improve circulation and muscle function, stimulate the immune system, and also release endorphins.

Traditionally, Finns would use a bundle of birch branches, called vihta or vasta, to gently beat their skin and increase circulation. After the sauna, people would typically cool off by taking a dip in a lake or a cold shower, and then relax in a rest room or outside.

Saunas have been a part of Finnish culture for centuries, and are considered a place to relax and socialize. Many Finns consider it as a way of life and has health benefits such as reducing stress, improving cardiovascular health, and helping to relieve pain.
